Under a Dartmoor Night Sky

It’s been a while since my last post and due to one thing and another, least of all COVID, my walks on the Moor have been few and far between over the last year. I’m hoping to rectify that in the near future and get back on track. In the meantime last week inspired by comet C/2020 F3, otherwise known as Neowise, I decided to…

Heather & Bees

It’s been a while since my last post. After spending the best part of a month in France and one thing or another, I’ve not managed to get out walking as much as I would like. Although I have been spending time out on the Moor it’s been more about enjoying the scenery and contemplating life rather than walking. I’ve also been experiencing problems with…

Lee Moor & China Clay

Another week has passed and the fine weather has continued. I’d had a really busy week and was really looking forward to some downtime out on the Moor. I decided on keeping ‘local’ this week and looked at shortish walk and a couple of small tors over towards Wotter, right on the edge of the park boundary with Lee Moor. As I drove along the…

Penn Beacon & Shell Top

The fine weather has continued to grace us over the last few weeks and it has been fantastic to be able to make the most of it. I’m not particularly a fair weather walker, I am very happy walking in all weathers and actually feel that Dartmoor is at its best during inclement weather. However when the sun is shining I love nothing more than…

Bellever Tor

It’s been a couple of weeks since my excursion on the north moor and last week I went in search of bluebell woods to photograph but the results were disappointing and so I didn’t post anything. This week I decided to visit a tor that I can’t ever remember bagging. I’ve driven past Bellever Tor many times over the years but have always been put…

Okement Hill & High Willhays

The good weather has continued across Dartmoor over the last few weeks and with the four day Bank Holiday weekend appearing, I started to think about spending a whole day out on the moor and immediately thought about heading to the north moor. So far in this blog I’ve not covered anything further north than Postbridge and was keen to find a route that would…

Fox Tor

Spring is finally here. The clocks have gone back, the evenings are drawing out, and the mornings are getting lighter. I’m not great in the winter, I suffer from SAD and so this time of year signals easier and brighter times ahead. Being out on the Moor in the fresh air, on my own with just my thoughts and enjoying exploring Dartmoor has always been…

Spring on Dartmoor

The arrival of Spring in the northern hemisphere signals new birth and the beginning of nature’s regeneration; Dartmoor is no different, with its plethora of wildlife and livestock that call the Moor their home starting to produce their young. By far the most recognisable and probably most loved of these is the Dartmoor Pony, a humble but hardy animal that has inhabited the moor for…

Yar Tor

Over the years I’ve driven past Sharp Tor many times, I’ve even pulled in at the little car park and sat looking at the rather striking Tor. However I’ve never explored this part of the moor and decided it was time to remedy that.  When I looked at the map I noticed that there were also two other tors in the vicinity and decided I…

Garmin InReach Mini

I have a new toy! I’ve been thinking about getting a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) for a while and trying to justify the expense of buying and running one against the benefits of carrying such a device. I am a Type 1 Diabetic, I inject insulin several times a day and as a result there is a risk that I could experience a hypoglycaemic episode,…

Higher White Tor

When I walked up to Whistman’s Wood  a couple of months ago, I spotted a substantial tor sitting just above the wood which turned out to be Longaford Tor, in fact on that same ridge there are six tors in a row. I plotted a route to try and bag all six deciding that I could start at Two Bridges, finish at Postbridge and get…

Higher & Lower Hartor

Another murky wet Sunday morning; it felt as though there have been an awful lot of these lately. For the last couple of weeks I’d had my sights set on Shavercombe Waterfall and had set my heart on it for this weekend. The forecast for the weekend had been good right up until Friday when it suddenly changed….. … time for a rethink. I decided…

Trowlesworthy Revisted

Snow has arrived on Dartmoor. In itself it’s not an unusual occurrence, the high moor generally gets an annual sprinkling above 200m however this year quite a substantial amount has fallen. Most of the roads traversing the deep moor were shut by Devon & Cornwall Police over fears of people becoming stuck or blocking access for emergency vehicles however there are a few places where…

Whiteworks

Whiteworks is without a shadow of a doubt one of my favourite places on the whole of Dartmoor. It’s not particularly pretty or scenic however it is super atmospheric and to me, encompasses everything that Dartmoor is about and I’ve been going there ever since I passed my driving test and got my first car. It’s the start of many walks including the infamous Fox…

Venford Falls

With the weather still not being great on the high moor I have been looking for more photo opportunities and a friend had told me about Venford Falls over on the East Moor. In my past I did a lot of fly fishing and was familiar with Venford Reservoir as it was a great source of natural brown trout which were always really good fun…
